| Ion Design is excited to be a part of The Catoctin Aqueduct Project, an exciting grassroots partnership to fund the restoration of a magnificent historic icon in the C&O Canal National Historical Park.
Also known as the "Most Beautiful Aqueduct" and the "Crooked Aqueduct," the Catoctin Aqueduct spanned Catoctin Creek for 139 years at the 51.5-mile mark of the canal towpath. In October 1973, after over fifty years of neglect and repeated ravishment by storms and floods, the 139 year-old aqueduct collapsed into Catoctin Creek. The project needed a pro-bono donation of design services for: a logo to communicate the need for community participation in restoring the historic structure; a website to provide information to the public, attract donors and serve as a conduit for online donations; and an initial fund raising brochure. By combining the graceful arches of the architecture of the Catoctin Aqueduct, with the image of supportive hands, the visual component of the logo emphasizes community participation and support. The tagline: “History is in Your Hands” lends strength to the visual by reminding the viewer that we are all responsible for caring for our historic treasures. The dynamic logo has been applied to lapel pins and business cards for volunteers to use in the awareness building efforts. Ion Design also designed the website for the project www.catoctinaqueduct.org and brochure. The website gives viewers a history lesson on why the Catoctin Aqueduct is important to the country and region, why the restoration is needed, and provides a conduit to online donations. The initial fund and awareness-raising brochure echoes elements of the website and provides a response vehicle for potential donors and volunteers. |

Ruth Bielobocky, Principal, Ion Design:
Our firm has been working with the National Park Service for 4 years designing interpretive outdoor exhibits for parks across the US. These exhibits educate millions of Americans on history, cultural and natural resources. We have developed a passion for parks and felt this was an opportunity to give back to our country in our own county. We have a long road ahead of us as we educate the public about this historic icon and entice them to donate. This is an opportunity for everyone in the community to give back to history. Whether you donate $10.00 or $100,000 together we can rebuild history. We are proud to be a part of this effort. Erin Snyder, Designer of Campaign Brochure and Interpretive Wayside Exhibits: |
